Inside Amy’s world: Dogs, Deco & Disaster
Inside Amy’s World: Dogs, Deco & Disaster

In Distorted Beat, Amy is a protagonist. That’s what I’ve always intended her to be and do - to take over. And she did—loudly, sarcastically, and with a tendency to interrupt even my most sensible plot ideas with something messier, funnier, or unexpectedly heartfelt.

Amy’s not just a rom-com lead. She’s a walking contradiction: a running addict who restores Art Deco furniture for fun, a people-person who’s burnt out from too many people, and someone whose greatest source of stability is a fluffy Bichon Frisé named Rory. No idea why.

Rory isn’t just a cute prop. He’s the heartbeat of Amy’s world—the creature who grounds her when anxiety spirals and the doorbell rings at the worst possible time (which it often does). He’s also the reason Tomasz, her brooding decathlete neighbour, first truly notices her. You could say the dog is the real matchmaker. (Don’t tell Amy.)

Her friendships—Claire, Katya, and Paddy—are just as vital. They’re not the token sidekicks but mirrors to different facets of Amy: the overthinker, the optimist, the saboteur, the ride-or-die. These people aren’t flawless, but together they’re the kind of support system you wish you had during a breakup… or a wardrobe malfunction… or a potential stalker situation.

Amy's hobbies aren’t just cute character quirks—they’re survival tactics. Running clears her mind. Sanding down an old vanity gives her a sense of control. Hosting chaotic dinner parties? Her way of pretending life is under control even when it’s very much not.

She’s the kind of woman who has a mini meltdown while locked out of her house—with her dog still inside—and still cracks a joke. That’s what made me fall for her. I hope readers do too.

Distorted Beat - a rom-com with riffs, rage, and one very persistent Bichon.
